Week #52, Project 52 – “Rest in peace…”

This week’s photo is my final entry into my 2012 Project 52. It’s been a year-long effort of getting out at least once a week regardless of weather, work schedule, or other commitments, and composing a photo that is more than just a snap shot. Sometimes it was tough to narrow the photos down to just one for the week, and sometimes it was a struggle to even take one decent shot. Sometimes the shots were rather routine and sometimes there was more inspiration or meaning behind the shot. This past Sunday, while out on the river, I received word that a dear family friend had just passed away after a long courageous battle with cancer. It was not the only loss of family or friends this past year. It’s a part of life we all face. While maybe not the best capture of the afternoon, this photo best expresses reflection of the somber yet hopeful tranquil passing of loved ones. May they forever rest in peace.
Week #51, Project 52 – “A tip of the hat…”

Although Friday was the official winter solstice, Saturday was the true shortest day of the year. And since I was hedging my bet on the December 21 Maya Apocalypse, I held off shooting my weekly photo just in case I wasn’t going to get a chance to post it anyway. If it was all going to end, I was somewhat hoping we would all go up in some big fireball. At least things would warm up. But fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, Saturday arrived on time, but it was still -38. My week 51 photo is a tip of my hat to our local SmugMug facebook photography group. It’s been a fun year of following smuggies and posting my own shots as well.
Week #50, Project 52 – “Chim, Chim, Cher-ee…”

For those of you old enough to remember “Mary Poppins”, this week’s photo is Bert’s worst nightmare. This past week a weather system moved in and dumped about a foot of snow. Since it was accompanied by temps in the mid +20s it was a welcomed relief. But the cold weather has quickly returned, and this shot in downtown was taken at about 1:30 this afternoon, with temps hovering around -35. Even if Bert traded his broom in for a snow shovel, I still think he would freeze his “Jolly Holidays,” and double “Step in Time” out of town. Just saying.
Week #49, Project 52 – “High noon on a short winter day…”

This week’s photo takes us back out into the cold. We are approaching the winter solstice and the days are pretty short – about 4 hours long. The sun barely makes it above the horizon, skips along the tree tops, and settles back down. Plus it was a brisk November and December has had a dubious start. It’s been at least -20 each night for the last fifteen days, with the low hitting -40. Even day time highs haven’t risen above -10 in that time. Seven of those days it never got above -20. So far in December our average temperature has been 27 degrees colder than normal , and our normal average temperature in December is nothing to write home about. But starting today, we are to supposed to get a reprieve, a week of above zero temps. This shot was taken at noon on the Tanana River on December 8th.
Week #48, Project 52 – “Up in flames…”

Week 48 was an experiment that went up in flames. The subject matter was “fire”, but nothing really turned out the way I envisioned. What you see here is one of the set-up shots on the ill-fated experiment. But when it’s been hovering around -30 outside, who cares, at least I didn’t need gloves.
Week #47, Project 52 – “Chena River fog…”

This week’s photo captures the union of warm river water, with -10 degree afternoon temperatures, and the sun as it glides along the horizon on it’s winter journey. This section of the Chena River is just below the power plant, and the warm, but clean discharge keeps this part of the river open most the year. This bend in the river, with the ever present fog and setting sun always catches my eye as I drive by, but this is the first time I have ever stopped to try and capture it.
Week #46, Project 52 – “Alaska Hockey…”

Last weekend the Alaska Nanooks hosted the nationally 9th ranked Western Michigan Broncos in a CCHA Conference matchup. The Nooks totally dominated the first game and won 6-1. They controlled play and took a two goal lead into the third period in the second game, but eventually dropped a 3-2 decision. This shot was from game one. It was military appreciation night and the Nooks were wearing their CAMO jerseys. The jerseys were only worn for this series and will be auctioned off.
Week #45, Project 52 – “Fairbanks International…”

My week 45 photo is a night shot of the Fairbanks International Airport. The newly re-built terminal received numerous design awards and favorable international press in the design community, so I’ve read. It’s generally a fairly quite airport in a fairly small community. Fairbanks is the smallest city in the United States with non-stop service to Europe, as Condor Airlines offers weekly flights to Frankfurt during the summer tourist season.

It wasn’t what I had in mind for an evening shoot, but my original plans failed miserably and this was plan B. But I guess that’s the whole idea of a “Project 52.” Get out and shoot something.
Week #44, Project 52 - “The morning lunch bunch…”

This week’s photo is of a couple of Common Redpolls (I believe) having lunch. It was a rather intimate gathering with them about twenty of their closest friends. Redpolls are one of the few hearty birds that winter over in interior Alaska. When morning light hits they are pretty active around the feeders. I took the opportunity to try out a new wireless remote. I was standing at the kitchen window drinking coffee as the little fellers braved the cold. It feels almost like cheating. But I’ll get over it.
